Mecobalamin: The Active Form of Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 comes in several forms. Cyanocobalamin is the older and cheaper form used in many supplements, and the body converts it into coenzyme forms before use. Mecobalamin, also written as methylcobalamin, is one of those coenzyme forms and is used directly.

B12 has two well established jobs. It acts with folate in the methylation cycle, which converts homocysteine to methionine and supports the making of DNA and of the myelin sheath around nerve fibres. Alpha Lipoic Acid: An Antioxidant With a Dual Nature

Alpha Lipoic Acid, often shortened to ALA, is made in small amounts by the body and also acts as a cofactor for enzymes involved in energy production inside mitochondria.

What makes it unusual is that it dissolves in both water and fat, so it can act in the watery inside of a cell and in fatty membranes. It also participates in recycling other antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E back to their active forms. Because oxidative stress is part of the picture in long standing diabetes, ALA has become a familiar ingredient in nerve support formulations. Benfotiamine and the Other B Vitamins

Thiamine is vitamin B1. Ordinary thiamine is water soluble and its uptake from the gut is limited. Zinc, Chromium, Inositol and Lutein

Chromium, as chromium picolinate, is a trace element studied for its part in glucose metabolism and insulin signalling; the picolinate form is used because it is absorbed better than simple chromium salts.

Lutein is a yellow carotenoid that the body cannot make. It concentrates in the macula of the retina, where it forms part of the macular pigment, which is why it appears in eye health formulations.
