Rosomni-20 vs Rosomni-10 and Atomni: Choosing a Statin Strength
Rosomni-20: Rosuvastatin Tablets IP
EMK Omni Pharma markets several statin products. This guide compares Rosomni-20 with Rosomni-10, the Rosomni-Gold combination and the Atomni atorvastatin range so you understand your doctor's choice.
Rosomni-10 vs Rosomni-20: same molecule, different intensity
Both products contain rosuvastatin; the difference is the amount in each tablet. Rosomni-10 delivers 10 mg, generally regarded as a moderate-intensity statin dose. Rosomni-20 delivers 20 mg, generally regarded as high-intensity.
Doctors often begin with the lower strength, especially in Indian patients, who as a group may reach higher blood levels of rosuvastatin than Western patients at the same dose. If the lipid profile after a few weeks shows that LDL has not reached its target, the doctor may step up to 20 mg. A patient who develops muscle symptoms on 20 mg may be moved down to 10 mg. Each step is a medical decision based on a test result, not a matter of preference.
Rosomni-Gold 75/75/20: rosuvastatin combined with antiplatelets
Rosomni-Gold 75/75/20 combines three medicines in one dose: aspirin 75 mg, clopidogrel 75 mg and rosuvastatin 20 mg. Aspirin and clopidogrel are antiplatelet medicines that make platelets less sticky and reduce the chance of a clot forming inside a narrowed artery or on a stent.
The combination is intended for patients with established heart disease, typically after a heart attack or angioplasty, who have been prescribed all three components anyway. One dose instead of three simplifies the routine and supports adherence. It is not a substitute for plain rosuvastatin in someone who only has high cholesterol, because the antiplatelet components carry a bleeding risk that is justified only by a clear cardiac indication.
Atomni-20 and Atomni-40: atorvastatin instead of rosuvastatin
Atomni-20 and Atomni-40 contain atorvastatin, a different statin molecule. Atorvastatin and rosuvastatin are the two statins capable of high-intensity LDL lowering, but they are not equally potent per milligram. Broadly, atorvastatin 40 mg sits in the same intensity band as rosuvastatin 20 mg, and atorvastatin 20 mg is closer to rosuvastatin 10 mg.
The two also differ in how they leave the body. Atorvastatin relies on the CYP3A4 enzyme and is affected by grapefruit and several common medicines; rosuvastatin is largely cleared unchanged and instead interacts with transporter blockers such as cyclosporine. Individual tolerance varies too, and a person who had muscle aches on one may do well on the other.
What a doctor considers when choosing between them
- Risk level: existing heart disease, diabetes or very high LDL points toward high-intensity therapy
- LDL target and baseline: how far LDL must fall decides the intensity needed
- Need for antiplatelets: only patients with a cardiac indication are candidates for Rosomni-Gold
- Kidney and liver function: severe kidney impairment favours lower rosuvastatin strengths
- Other medicines: interactions may make one statin safer than the other
- Previous tolerance: a history of muscle symptoms shapes the choice of molecule and dose
- Age and ethnicity: older patients and Asian patients are often started lower
Why you must not switch strengths or products yourself
Halving a Rosomni-20 tablet, taking two Rosomni-10 tablets, or accepting an Atomni product because the chemist is out of stock can all go wrong. Doses may end up too low to protect you or too high for your kidneys and muscles. A combination product may add antiplatelet medicines you were never meant to take, with a real risk of bleeding.
If a product is unavailable, ask your chemist to contact your doctor, or take the prescription back to the clinic. This article is for general information only and is not a substitute for advice from a registered medical practitioner.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Rosomni-20 twice as effective as Rosomni-10?
- No. Doubling a statin dose adds a further but smaller reduction in LDL rather than doubling the effect. The gain and the higher side-effect risk are weighed by the doctor.
- Can I take two Rosomni-10 tablets instead of one 20 mg tablet?
- Only if your doctor specifically says so. The total dose would be the same, but changes should be made deliberately and recorded on your prescription.
- Who should take Rosomni-Gold instead of plain rosuvastatin?
- Patients who have been prescribed aspirin, clopidogrel and rosuvastatin together, usually after a heart attack or stent. It is a cardiologist's decision.
- Is Atomni-40 the same as Rosomni-20?
- They fall in a similar intensity band but are different molecules with different interactions. They are not interchangeable without a doctor's instruction.
- Why did my doctor change me from Atomni to Rosomni?
- Common reasons include a need for a larger LDL reduction, an interaction with another medicine, or muscle symptoms on the previous statin. Ask your doctor for the specific reason.
- Can I go back to Rosomni-10 if I feel fine on 20 mg?
- Feeling fine is not a measure of cholesterol control. Dose reductions are made on the basis of test results and side effects, by your doctor.
