Why a Controlled Release Form Exists

Plain nitroglycerin does not last long in the body. Left as an ordinary tablet, the level would rise sharply and fall away quickly, giving an uncomfortable peak followed by a gap with no protection.

A controlled release tablet solves this by holding the medicine in a matrix or coating that lets it out slowly as the tablet moves through the digestive tract. The result is a steadier level over several hours, generally with fewer peak related effects and longer cover from a single tablet.
