Atomni-10 Storage: Heat, Monsoon Humidity and Expiry Tips

The label for atorvastatin tablets asks for storage at a temperature not exceeding 30°C, protected from moisture. Across much of India, indoor temperatures in summer can pass this mark, especially in upper-floor flats, tin-roofed rooms or spaces without cross-ventilation. A warm room for a day will not spoil the tablet, but repeated heat over weeks can gradually reduce potency and affect the film coating.

Choose the coolest, driest spot in the house: a bedroom cupboard shelf, a drawer away from the outer wall, or a closed cabinet in an air-conditioned room. Refrigeration is not required and is best avoided, since condensation on a cold strip adds moisture, the very thing the label warns against.

Moisture is the bigger enemy of film-coated tablets. During the monsoon, indoor humidity often stays high for weeks, and tablets exposed to damp air can swell, stick, discolour or lose their coating. Keep each strip inside its carton, and place the carton in an airtight container or zip-lock pouch. A silica gel sachet can go inside the container to absorb moisture; never let children handle or swallow it.

Avoid pressing out tablets in advance to fill a weekly pill box during the monsoon unless the box seals tightly. The blister pocket is the tablet's best protection until the moment it is taken.

For journeys, carry the strips in hand luggage or a bag that stays with you, not in the boot of a car or a luggage hold. Take a few extra days' supply in case of delays and keep a copy of the prescription, which also helps if you need to buy more from a chemist at your destination. On long train journeys a small insulated pouch keeps tablets away from heat. On arrival, move the medicine out of the bag and into a cool cupboard.

The expiry date is printed on the blister foil and the carton along with the batch number. Expired atorvastatin is not known to be harmful, but its strength cannot be relied on, so replace it. Discard any tablet that has changed colour, looks mottled, has cracks in the coating, feels soft or has crumbled inside the pocket, or whose foil seal is broken. Buy from a licensed chemist and check that the strip is intact and the MRP and expiry are clearly printed.

Store every medicine where small children cannot see or reach it, ideally a high cupboard with a latch; a colourful strip on a table is an invitation. If a child swallows tablets, contact a doctor or hospital immediately, even if the child seems well.

For unused or expired tablets, do not flush them or throw loose strips into open bins. Ask your chemist whether they accept returns; otherwise press the tablets out, mix them with used tea leaves or coffee grounds, seal them in a bag and put them in household waste, scratching out personal details on the packaging.
